i've had very limited interwebs access for about 3 to 4 weeks now due to a dead PC at home and fixage required on the mac. :(

plus surveillance at w3rk meaning very limited webstime.

the result of this... i've totally missed out on writers festival. AND in a piece of sheer absurdity I've missed seeing CHINA MIEVILLE at the writers' festival. This is one of those times I feel like I live in the heart of the city but might as well live in the freaking antarctic.

I'm actually pretty close to devastated: i went to the other side of the world to hear people talk about the future of fiction and dystopic environments and heard very little about it. meanwhile, one of the eminent authors is discussing this very subject in my literal backyard and I dont' see it. One mightily peeved wee rabbit right now.

Just call me (a disgusted) Dr Philistine.

bah.

They performed Metal and Cars... *sigh*

wish I'd gotten to see that particular combination on stage. I didn't enjoy the last NIN tour here very much at all, this concert looked a hundred times better.

Black Inc. is pleased to announce that Delia Falconer will edit Best
Australian Stories 2009. We are now inviting submissions for this year's
anthology, and we wondered if this might be of interest to you and your
students. If you have students or colleagues who might like to submit
work, we'd love for you to pass this on to them.

Stories can be sent by email to me at this address, or by post to:

Delia Falconer

c/- Black Inc. Books

The deadline for submissions is 1 August 2009, and the book will be
published this November. Although there's no official word limit, most
stories in previous years' collections have been between 2000 and 5000
words, and 8000 words tends to be the upper practical limit. Previously
published stories must have been published after 1 August 2008.

If you have any questions about the anthology, please feel free to get
in touch. Many thanks for your time.

Best wishes,

Saving Salt Publishing: Just One Book
Friday, May 22, 2009

As many of you will know, Jen and I have been struggling to keep Salt moving since June last year when the economic downturn began to affect our press.
Our three year funding ends this year: we've £4,000 due from Arts Council England in a final payment, but cannot apply through Grants for the Arts for further funding for Salt's operations. Spring sales were down nearly 80% on the previous year, and despite April's much improved trading, the past twelve months has left us with a budget deficit of over £55,000. It's proving to be a very big hole and we're having to take some drastic measures to save our business.

Here's how you can help us to save Salt and all our work with hundreds of authors around the world.

JUST ONE BOOK

1. Please buy just one book, right now. We don't mind from where, you can buy it from us or from Amazon, your local shop or megastore, online or offline. If you buy just one book now, you'll help to save Salt. Timing is absolutely everything here. We need cash now to stay afloat. If you love literature, help keep it alive. All it takes is just one book sale. Go to our online store and help us keep going.

2. Share this note on your Facebook or MySpace profile. Tell your friends.
If we can spread the word about our cash crisis, we can hopefully find more sales and save our literary publishing. Remember it's just one book, that's all it takes to save us. Please do it now.

Fox to Make Reality TV Show Out of Company Layoffs

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Published: April 8, 2009

NEW YORK (AP) -- The Fox network is making a reality show out of the troubled economy.

An upcoming series titled, ''Someone's Gotta Go,'' lets employees of a small business decide which one of their colleagues will be laid off.

Fox says it has no air date yet for the series, which is being developed by the company behind ''Big Brother'' and ''Deal or No Deal.'' Each week, a different company lays off an employee.

Fox also wouldn't reveal the show's host, which it says is a business consultant who will offer advice to participating companies.

i've not been able to stop listening to I, Assassin for the last 3 days.

I've become more Numanoid than humanoid!

Why, Pino Palladino, has your fretless bass cast such a potent spell on my ears?

wow! a total inspiration!

His performance last night was genuine and potent. I'm so glad he has continued to write music and perform, as he really does have a conviction and charisma that can't help but endear.

Unfortunately i didn't get any photos, but I believe there are plenty out there on the interwebs already.

I was feeling somewhat exhausted and toyed with the idea of not going: but I'm glad I did in the end: he was really great.

:D

Hoping to see Watchmen sometime in the next couple of weeks. Although the reviews online have been mixed, I'd really still like to see it for myself. I've spent a bit of thesis time on Watchmen and this release kind of 'bookends' the time period I'm discussing. speaking of which... on with the thesis show.

and somewhat of a fascination is what I have for Putin.

Acknowledging his more than dubious past, I do have to admire the way he pours cold water on the expansionist desires of Dell @ the WEF

have moved (in part) to the inner north! have carted the essentials over: laptop and ipod stereo, plus enough clothes and girly products to get me through.

all the serious shifting happens next week though, prior to which must happen the packing and cleaning. urghgh but

a) I didn't take much to the transition-house and
b) I need my things - living in transitory mode still and it means an innovative approach to matching clothing in a deceptive appearance of variety, plus the sleeping on the floor business. I am fooling myself I'm in a Tatami but given the lack of ricepaper windows or hot and cold running tamago rolls the ruse may soon wear thin: although as a roomstyle I'm thinking attempting some japanese sparseness may not suck. I must admit though, I'm surprised at the buoyancy of my body in coping with the austerity of the sleeping environment... my back is a tiny bit stiff but hardly anything to complain about.

I'm so happy here, comparative to my squalid-grief-hole in Preston - my housemate was fantastic and in theory the house was fine... however my personal preferences for a room don't include lemon-yellow walls or a distinct lack of light. Not to mention the fact that preston might as well be bendigo in many ways - my part of Preston anyway. Nothing of interest in the immediate vicinity (unless you count the questionable , and a set of substandard shops 15 minutes walk from home.

The sun beckons... as does the ridiculously accessible city. :D

any northies who want to catch up sometime, let me know!
