I had the great pleasure of interviewing ASF for The Quietus :D

not only were they charmant, but they dished some dirt on Batcave days which was appreciated :)

i've had very limited interwebs access for about 3 to 4 weeks now due to a dead PC at home and fixage required on the mac. :(

plus surveillance at w3rk meaning very limited webstime.

the result of this... i've totally missed out on writers festival. AND in a piece of sheer absurdity I've missed seeing CHINA MIEVILLE at the writers' festival. This is one of those times I feel like I live in the heart of the city but might as well live in the freaking antarctic.

I'm actually pretty close to devastated: i went to the other side of the world to hear people talk about the future of fiction and dystopic environments and heard very little about it. meanwhile, one of the eminent authors is discussing this very subject in my literal backyard and I dont' see it. One mightily peeved wee rabbit right now.

Just call me (a disgusted) Dr Philistine.

bah.

They performed Metal and Cars... *sigh*

wish I'd gotten to see that particular combination on stage. I didn't enjoy the last NIN tour here very much at all, this concert looked a hundred times better.

Black Inc. is pleased to announce that Delia Falconer will edit Best
Australian Stories 2009. We are now inviting submissions for this year's
anthology, and we wondered if this might be of interest to you and your
students. If you have students or colleagues who might like to submit
work, we'd love for you to pass this on to them.

Stories can be sent by email to me at this address, or by post to:

Delia Falconer

c/- Black Inc. Books

Level 5, 289 Flinders Lane

Melbourne VIC 3000

The deadline for submissions is 1 August 2009, and the book will be
published this November. Although there's no official word limit, most
stories in previous years' collections have been between 2000 and 5000
words, and 8000 words tends to be the upper practical limit. Previously
published stories must have been published after 1 August 2008.

If you have any questions about the anthology, please feel free to get
in touch. Many thanks for your time.

Best wishes,

Denise O'Dea

Saving Salt Publishing: Just One Book
Friday, May 22, 2009

As many of you will know, Jen and I have been struggling to keep Salt moving since June last year when the economic downturn began to affect our press.
Our three year funding ends this year: we've £4,000 due from Arts Council England in a final payment, but cannot apply through Grants for the Arts for further funding for Salt's operations. Spring sales were down nearly 80% on the previous year, and despite April's much improved trading, the past twelve months has left us with a budget deficit of over £55,000. It's proving to be a very big hole and we're having to take some drastic measures to save our business.

Here's how you can help us to save Salt and all our work with hundreds of authors around the world.

JUST ONE BOOK

1. Please buy just one book, right now. We don't mind from where, you can buy it from us or from Amazon, your local shop or megastore, online or offline. If you buy just one book now, you'll help to save Salt. Timing is absolutely everything here. We need cash now to stay afloat. If you love literature, help keep it alive. All it takes is just one book sale. Go to our online store and help us keep going.

2. Share this note on your Facebook or MySpace profile. Tell your friends.
If we can spread the word about our cash crisis, we can hopefully find more sales and save our literary publishing. Remember it's just one book, that's all it takes to save us. Please do it now.
